Karen Coleman is one of Ireland's most experienced broadcasters with substantial background in news and current affairs reporting and presentation. Karen has worked in both radio and television as a reporter, producer and director spending more than nine years with the BBC. Karen reported for the BBC from the Balkans. She worked in the region from 1995-1998.
The Wide Angle is a three-times award-winning current affairs show that carries substantial coverage of Irish and International issues. Her Sunday morning show includes an in-depth interview with a high-profile guest along with a review of the Sunday papers and a panel discussion on a topical issue.
The Wide Angle won the 2002 PPI Radio award for Best Current Affairs Radio Show in Ireland. It won the MAMA multi-cultural award for radio work in 2003 and it was nominated for another MAMA multicultural award in 2004. In November 2004 Karen won the prestigious Irish ESB Media Award for best radio documentary. This accolade was awarded to Karen for her one hour documentary on the effects of the war on Iraq. It included compelling contributions from the mother of an American soldier killed in action in Iraq in 2004 along with an interview with the young Iraq boy, Ali Abbas, who was very badly injured during the bombing of his home in Baghdad in March 2003. Karen followed Ali's story and remarkable recovery when he went to London to receive rehab treatment.
